: Hehe. Nice, I'm not sure if you were joking or arguing or both, but you're
: still wrong. And can't smooth-picture your way out of it.

Pardon my earlier posts. Things at work were making me... cranky. (Imagine coming to work and finding that, thanks to a server malf, everything takes twice as long to do as you'd planned. Grrr...)

I was trying to point out that VTOL craft can carry VERY bulky loads in sling-mounts... the Chinook helicopter pictures (boosed from the personal site of someone in the Air National Guard) show extremely bulky objects like that cottage and the howitzer with prime mover and loads. I couldn't find a shot of a Chinook with a large pallet load underslung, which was the shot I really wanted to put up. There was one picture of an entire cargo container (the size of a truck trailer) being hitched up but the shot didn't give the scale.

Imagine one of those COBB Industries containers from outside the Cairo. They're modeled after real-world cargo containers. A real-world Chinook can carry two of those side-by-side in a cargo sling. Would you agree that two of the big "field kitchen" boxes would fit into one of those containers with room left over? That'd work out to 4 of the big crates plus a few of the smaller ones for each Pelican, assuming that a Pelican has the same lift capability as a Chinook. (Which is probably an understatement.) Add in the tail lift and the internal stowage, and you can get a hefty number of boxes hauled. Then look at the wing mounts... they can carry smaller cargo loads too instead of multiple rocket launchers.

You may not get 66 tons of cargo, but you can get awfully close with external cargo stowage.

-- Steve wonders if he got awfully close to that 2000 word essay on the subject.
