In Response To: Re: On the subject of the Gauss Cannon... (Sage Scorpion)
: Speaking of the asteroid belt, would that not be another perfect defense
: option? Pack some fighters and smaller escort ships like frigates or
: something in larger rocks, wait for the Covenant fleet to pass, and then
: hit them with salvoes right around the time the main salvo is hitting.
: Even if they couldn't do much damage, they could be backed up with 10-15
: Super-MACs, which would create a serious crossfire. The Covenant couldn't
: possibly stand up to that, even with 500 ships. Frigates and fighters
: wouldn't stand a chance, but it would take some ships away from the main
: assault fleet, which would be whittled down by the Super-MAC crossfire
: plus the nuclear mines PLUS the fleet insystem. With an option like that,
: I don't possibly see how the UNSC could overlook something like that.
: Dude, if you have some time on your hands, could you draw up some plans
: for that? That would be sweet.
I did something like that with that asteroid belt in my science fiction series but it wouldn't work so well against the Covenant. All they have to do is perform a slip-space jump from the outer edges of the system and they can arrive right at (or even inside) the Lunar Defense Perimiter.
