True, but no one really knows the exact speed of a Super-MAC gun. Well, maybe I'm wrong, but I don't have my copy of TFoR handy. But assuming that they do fire at your given speed, it would be near impossible to hit anything. It would be like a .50 cal. bullet being shot with a 9mm cartridge. Less, actually. Firing at that speed would give the Covies enough time to dodge if at any kind of range. That is to say anywhere beyond the asteroid belt.
Speaking of the asteroid belt, would that not be another perfect defense option? Pack some fighters and smaller escort ships like frigates or something in larger rocks, wait for the Covenant fleet to pass, and then hit them with salvoes right around the time the main salvo is hitting. Even if they couldn't do much damage, they could be backed up with 10-15 Super-MACs, which would create a serious crossfire. The Covenant couldn't possibly stand up to that, even with 500 ships. Frigates and fighters wouldn't stand a chance, but it would take some ships away from the main assault fleet, which would be whittled down by the Super-MAC crossfire plus the nuclear mines PLUS the fleet insystem. With an option like that, I don't possibly see how the UNSC could overlook something like that. Dude, if you have some time on your hands, could you draw up some plans for that? That would be sweet.
