In Response To: Really? (Magh Tuireadh) Imagine you're halfway between the center of a spherical shell and the point at the very top of the shell. Now you're correct that each infinitesimal mass point above you is closer than the ones below, so its pull is stronger. However, the *total* amount of mass in the shell which is below you is much larger than the amount of mass above you (because you're floating some distance above the center of the shell). The upper section's pull is magnified by its closeness; the lower section's pull is magnified by its greater mass. In a ring the upper section's pull wins out; in a spherical shell they cancel; in a hyperspherical shell the lower section's pull wins out. In case you haven't figured it out yet, my mission is to get everyone here so confused about physics that they can't hope to pursue a career in it, thereby leaving all the graduate positions wide open for me to select from at my leisure. :) --SiliconDream
