Atmosphere?

Thinking about this statement I started to wonder how there could be an atmosphere on the halo. Im only a first year physics student, but wouldnt gas be compresed against the inner surface and expand the only way it can, towards the sides and just vent off the ring? that is unless there are giant bariers or something on the edges of the halo to contain it.
