Gah....Gravity!

Mass always exerts gravity, no matter how trivial it may seem in relation to a greater mass, it still does. The mass above you ALWAYS needs to be acounted for. Thus, when applying to a ring, we cannot ignore the ring itself. However, on a ring, the gravity cone would look like a normal cone, with a smaller, inverted cone in the middle, with a Lagrange point at the very center (assuming uniform mass). When thinking about ring gravity, one must consider the rest of the ring, pulling you in many different directions. Also, the mountains cannot be disregarded, because the pull you away from the ring. Thinkabout like this, on earth, while mountains are above you, they still exert gravity on you. However, they pull you up, towards them, instead of pulling down as the rest of the earth does. The effect is negligible because the larger mass of the Earth counteracts this and a lot more. The concept of a gravitational center is incorrect, for we cannot concievably establish the gravitational center of a ringworld without knowing more about the ringworld itself. It is simpler to break it into smaller chunks and particles, and deal with many interacting gravitational cones. If we dont, then we are liable to forget the effects as you suggested we do with the ring. There is the possibility that the downwards force (relative to you) exerted by the mass under you = the upward/sideways force exerted by the more distant rest of the ring, but I really dont feel like calculating that, and doubt very much that I could. Finally, a ring is a much more complicated shape, and involves fields acting in different directions, causing the gravitational cone to be an odd shape. The calculations for a sphere are much distorted, if not meaningless when applied to a sphere. However, I may be wrong, it is beyond the scope of my knowledge. .:Magh Tuireadh
