Either Butcher or Loren corrected me the first time I suggested what you're suggesting, and now I get to be Yoda. :)

A ring's interior gravity does not cancel as a spherical shell's does; instead, objects are pulled toward the nearest side of the ring. This is more or less because the amount of mass on the far side of the ring isn't large enough to counteract the stronger pull of the less massive but nearer side . Basically, the more dimensions the shell is in, the stronger the pull to the center:

1 dimensional shell--two mass points:

The object is strongly pulled toward the nearer point.
2 dimensional shell--ring:

The object is weakly pulled toward the nearest point on the ring.
3 dimensional shell--spherical shell:

The object experiences no gravity.
4 dimensional shell--"hyperspherical shell" (set of all points in a 4-dimensional space w. distance R from a given point):

The object is pushed away from the nearest point on the shell toward the center.

For higher dimensions, the centripetal pull gets stronger and stronger.
