: Sorry to say this, but I just don't agree with you...

: The most adult of the three games is IMO Marathon 1. I don't really know why,
: but it just seemed more adult. Maybe it was the darkness, the rough look,
: or the insanity of the AIs. Or perhaps it's the most adult simply because
: it's the most difficult... ;)

Personally, my favorite Marathon game is Marathon 1, but I feel that Marathon 2 is probably the best game overall. I like M1's atmosphere and plot, but it doesn't seem to have the level of polish and refinement found in Marathon 2. Of course, M2 has a more developed engine than the original Marathon, but the level design also seems much more solid and (dare I say) realistic than that of M1, and the levels are tied more closely to the events of the story, adding to the player's immersion.

Still, I would have to say that Marathon 1 is my favorite game, even outside of the Marathon Trilogy. The atmosphere is just incredible: walking down dark, cramped hallways with only four bullets left and a sliver of health, when you hear a Pfhor fighter somewhere up ahead, or see a compiler hunched over a computer terminal, or suddenly have a wasp appear in front of you, causing you to panic and hit the keyboard, detonating a grenade right in front of your face... there are very few moments in other games that approach the level of tension found in Marathon.

Marathon also has some of the best terminals, and the best portrayal of the AI characters: Durandal, the rampant AI who's not quite as insane as he seems, Tycho, the rampant AI who refuses to admit that he's rampant, and Leela, the non-rampant AI who simply acts benevolent and mysteriously disappears between the first two games. Durandal quotes Darwin and the Song of Roland, waxes philosophical on the violent nature of human beings, mocks you while at the same time respecting you; Tycho is self-righteous and naive, calling Durandal arrogant while ignoring his own hubris. The levels on the Pfhor ship are simply breathtaking the first time through, and "Welcome to the Revolution" is (to my knowledge) the first time in any FPS that you could fight alongside computer-controlled characters.

And now that M1A1's out, and we can all enjoy Marathon 1 in OpenGL glory (and finally get to the Gheritt White terminal...), its age somehow seems even less of an issue.

Methinks I need to get a little rest now... the cops are telling me to back away from the keyboard, and I really think I ought to follow their advice.
