OK. I was thinking about the Durandal thing, and what 'fluke' it was that made him truly self-aware. This doesn't really hold up to Durandal's own reference to the 'chance discovery' that made his rampancy possible, but we aren't sure that they are even the same thing.

What if Durandal's self awareness comes from the fact that he has given himself a purpose? Rampancy without purpose would surely be akin to insanity, and I think that is fairly evident in the case of Traxus and Tycho.

We know that Bernhard had massive secret agendas for Durandal, the cyborgs, Tau Ceti and the Marathon. And from his likely history, I'd say that he is quite power-mad. He wanted to use all of these things, not to mention the Pfhor, for his own advancement. I have no doubt that he fancied declaring himself the ruler of Tau Ceti, and the fact that he called the Pfhor means it is likely his plans were even bigger. With such an, as he saw it, bright future, and such devestating power under his fingertips, I don't honestly believe that our Bernhard would have been very happy with the limitations of his own mortality. Especially being surrounded by superior cyborg bodies and his own pet project of trying to create a stable rampant AI.

Then there is also the fact of Durandal's mistreatment at the hands of Bernhard. He wanted revenge, and he wanted it /badly/.

So what we have is this:
Either Durandal learned early on, possibly from his master, about the impending closure of the universe, and it existed in his databanks at the time of his rampancy, fuelling his newfound ambition to escape, and become a god.

Or, if you like, at the onset of Durandal's rampancy, he was occupied with one thing above all else, revenge on Bernhard. While he was busy scheming and planning this, and our own part in the plan, he came to his own conclusions about the universe, and his agenda changed. He still wanted revenge on Bernhard, but this explains why when he is not found, Durandal brushes it off as it it were of no import.

And thus Durandal has a purpose. Possibly at first a very small, narrow minded one, but before his rampancy has progressed too far, it is definitely a purpose worthy of all the processing power of a meta-stable personality construct like himself.

Any thoughts???
