Assuming that Bungie's Tau Ceti is indeed the Tau Ceti, then your are indeed correct and Leela was in error. Still, I somehow doubt that Durandal would have waited until Leela's message had reached Sol before making contact. By then the earth might have been nothing more than space debries and humanity would have been enslaved by the Pfhor. Regardless of distance, I think we have to assume that humankind's first word about the destruction of the colony at Tau Ceti came from Durandal. The only thing that would be different with the shorter distance is that Sol would have been aware of the Marathon's arrival at Tau Ceti, but not that the colony had been established yet. I still think that Durandal's arrival would have been very "interesting".
