In Response To: Re: what? (thermoplyae) : That the memory usage grows exponentially does not tell you anything about
True. I was merely pointing out that the growth is exponential. The processes themselves (in this case, Durandal) would react differently depending on many things. Judging by Leela's comment, Durandal's growth into* the systems of the Marathon had side-effects of which Leela was not fond. : Furthermore, that a particular part of the program increases exponentially in
Also true. In the case of these AIs they are simply stated as "growing". What this means is open to some interpretation. I took it to mean the overall expanse of the AI, along with its general intelligence**. There may be reasons why mentioning the subject of exponential growth is not useful, but all it takes is one good reason why it would be useful to justify the post. Since the terminals explicitly use the terms "exponential" and "growth", looking up the definition of exponential growth is relevant. Just because you know it already does not mean someone else does not. : I love math discussion as much as the next guy, but I think we should avoid
I did not mean to jump to conclusions. I was simply showing a hypothetical example. The reason for it was mostly because I was curious and decided to crunch a few numbers. Obviously we cannot know the exact rate of growth (I think this was Document's point), but there are ways to find rough estimates. The end point was to simply show that a rampant AI can grow extremely quickly. : Also, come to think of it, there's more here. For instance, what the
True. Actually, this is a good discussion... lab testing on rampancy has been limited. Am I not correct in remembering a theory that Strauss' plan for Tau Ceti was to test Durandal on a planet-scale network? In any case, the network on the UESC Marathon would have been small enough to cause Durandal some growth pains, which is why Leela was getting annoyed. : Durandal was on the Marathon for a couple hundred years (iirc). You can come
True. I was not trying to guess at how long Durandal would need to take over the Marathon. I was simply demonstrating how exponential growth may relate in regards to rampancy. : I guess my real point is that we don't know enough about Marathon to do any
I completely agree. I was just throwing numbers out so people would have a little something to think about and to demonstrate that Durandal's growth was probably very sudden from Leela's perspective. * Growth, in terms of Marathon AI, can include infiltrating other systems. This is mentioned in the account of Traxus and is reinforced by Leela's comment about Durandal's growth.
