Perhaps Strauss never let himself be scanned or teleported precisely *because* it would put him at Durandal's mercy.
Still: If pattern buffers let you copy a person, then why not send 1000 cyborgs to attack Lh'owon?
Maybe the buffer stores your mind, but we lack the ability to build a human body from scratch, so it can only be used to scan human minds for simulation? I wonder if Tycho ever told the Pfhor this, given Durandal's comment about Pfhor AIs not being self-aware. Then again, it could well be that artificial AIs are better adapted to digital existence than scanned organic minds. Or/and that human pattern buffer software was designed to read information specifically from human brains, not Pfhor.
Information about what patter buffers are for is exactly the sort of thing the writers would have no reason to withhold. I wonder if Jason or Matt still remembers?
