Well, we know that you can be saved in a pattern buffer for re-use... that may be outside of canon as "required for the game", but who knows.
I agree that this whole thing should fall into place once we figure out where the AI come from. Unfortunately, I haven't found anything suggesting an origin. There is hope, however, seeing as I have really only read a small number of terminals with the thinking cap on.
We do know that rampancy was discovered and diagnosed:
The three stages were diagnosed shortly after the first
Rampancies were discovered on Earth in the latter part of the
twenty first century.
The Marathon mythos was created in the latter part of the twentieth century, so they figured whatever they thought of for creating these AI was plausible to assume 100 years or so.
But the really interesting thing is how rampancy is always referred to as a mental disease. Something that doesn't have a mind cannot contract a mental disease. It seems strange to talk about the creation of an artificial mind when no one really understands how a human mind is created.
That doesn't mean we can't try though. :D
What we do know is that Strauss had some form of direct control over Durandal's rampancy. Did Strauss create Durandal? Did we ever figure out what the humiliation he caused Durandal was?
I wish that I had made him experience the
humiliation that he inflicted on me, but he
died before I got the chance.
In the same terminal as the blip above we find Durandal saying this:
That was before I could talk
back to him, when he would have crushed me
if he'd known of my growth.
So Strauss wasn't omniscient and even he didn't know everything about rampancy and Durandal.
But Durandal drops another hint about his rampancy here:
I can barely tolerate humans: slow, stupid,
and irritating. Their only contribution to
my existence was the chance discovery that
made my rampancy possible.
(btw, I'm pulling a lot of this from the Strauss page, which has a few excellent theories involving Strauss)
Was this chance discovery the finding of Tau Ceti?
Anyone else know of other references to any of the AI's beginnings?
In a last bit of more trivia:
Speaking of Tycho, I have detected his
presence in the Pfhor net. I assume he is
using the Pfhor's faster-than-light
communications technology to enter the net
remotely from a nearby system. His
appearance can only foreshadow the arrival
of Pfhor reinforcements.
Tycho can "enter" a net. What does this "enter" mean? Is is similar to "hacking"? Meh.
