: "Main character" is still my top vote, just because it sounds nicer
The problem with main character is the same as the one brought up when classifying the AIs. As you have agreed, the AIs are "characters" in a strictly third-person sense. One can't really manipulate or interact with the characters... yet the SO is quite clearly something with which the world interacts. "Main character" insinuates that the SO is one of many characters -- but all of the other characters are AIs. Doesn't quite work. Player-character (or PC) is a general out-of-universe term that predates Marathon by a few years and refers to... well, to the "main character" such as it is. PC is, from a technical standpoint, the most appreciated term. That being said, colloquially, "player" is the least cumbersome. Plotwise, the real-life player and the SO are two different entities, but it doesn't really matter. Referring to the Player implies the SO from an in-game standpoint, whereas referring directly to the SO implies the SO from a plot standpoint.
