Reminds me of something I learned from the military: UOLOP=FUS...leave it to the army to come up with a thing like that (Unpreparedness or lack of planning equals a f***ed up situation). Glad to see you're taking the "planning=good" route. Tedious, but it tends to be worth it.

Reading the discussion thus far, I'll side with you. Main character fits the purpose better than player or player character. I totally agree with everything FoBo has said about the terminology, but your point about needing it to work with both English and the intricacies of linking tips the balance for me.
