In Response To: I agree, but come to a different conclusion (MrHen)

: I agree that the player is irrelevant. So why make reference to the player at
: all, unless necessary?

I'm not. Calling the SO "the player" is just a safe term, which is what I'm saying and have been since the start of this topic.

: There are going to be references to the players outside of the context of
: the Marathon story. Strategies and multi-player are the two most obvious
: examples.

Fobo said (and I thoroughly agree) that both of those are out-of-universe situations, and any use of the phrase "the player" can easily be recognized via context to refer to the gamer as opposed to the SO.

: Theoretically, if I am writing an article about House of Pain and say that
: "During a king of the hill match, [[player]]s often dodge in and out
: of the hill." the link should not take me to an article on the
: Security Officer, the Main character, or the Player character. It should
: take me to an article on players. The article will be rather empty,
: because no one really cares, but it makes sense.

Or you could just not have an article about the gamer at all, since who cares, as you said. Everyone will know exactly what you mean.

: Links coming from a story-line perspective should not end up at an article
: about players (regardless of how sparse the article is). Besides, since
: the player is not actually a character, the link really should not
: reference the player anyway (as opposed to Player character, in which the
: Player is just the descriptor).

See above; the gamer should have no article at all.
