In Response To: Re: whoops, forgot a point (Forrest of B.org)

: I suppose it may be useful in some contexts to say something like "the
: player [whoever it may be sitting at the keyboard] can choose to do
: such-and-such or so-and-so". But even then, it seems like in most
: contexts, that could apply equally well to the player-character: the
: choice is his. About the only place I can see referring to
: the-player-behind-the-keyboard that isn't equivalent to the
: player-character is talking about out-of-game-universe things like setting
: preferences and gathering netgames, or phrases like "many players
: found such-and-such scenario difficult because...", in which case
: context should make it abundantly clear that we're not talking about the
: player-character, but about the people driving their mice around. And in
: those cases, we wouldn't be linking to an article about "the
: player", since as I said above there's not really much to be said
: about "him".

"Player" refers to anyone who is playing the games and is needed when discussing strategies or making references to things like Co-op or Multi-player.

The actual article "Player" would not have much in it, but it will still exist. It would have a little smidgen on the semantic difference between the "Player character" or "Main character" to help un-confuse people and then provide a list of useful links to relevant things.

What else, exactly, I do not know. There would not be much, but there is a difference between "Player" and "Player character" and I think it should be reflected in the wiki because, well, there is a difference. Some time in the future someone may want to write an article about the people who play Marathon... or whatever. I will not be using it, but I think we should allow it to be used correctly in the future.

It certainly does not hurt as once we make a decision there will be plenty of explanatory text in the wiki describing the differences between everything.

"Player", in my opinion, should never refer to the character the player controls. "Player character" could, but I would just rather remove all references to the player in terms of story. Like you said, there is really not much to be said on him. Why entangle him in the story-line?
