In Response To: Re: more on social darwinism (MrHen) : Interesting. I guess I wouldn't know if that was the case because I haven't
: But I totally agree with your last point. I see religion and science as both
Actually, scientists do not search for the "truth." Truth is a metaphysical statement. Science cannot "prove" anything absolutely in the sense that you can in mathematics. We can refute hypotheses with explicit test implications. Mathematics deals with proofs only because their veracity is couched in terms of their premises. Empirical science is actually a quest for ever better approximations of the natural world. Scientific methodologies offer a way of understanding empirical reality (as defined by our observations). Science evalutes competing explanations of empirical phenomena. Here's a bit from a lecture I gave a few years back. It might help you understand science a little better. (1) Criterion of Demarcation. This brings me to the first scientific principle: that of demarcation between science and metaphysics. The demarcation principle as developed by Karl Popper and others is used to determine which proposed entities and processes are amenable to scientific inquiry. The standard criterion is the ability for hypotheses to be potentially refuted. For example, scientific creationism fails to meet this criterion whereas evolutionary theory succeeds. Processes, entities (or their proxies) must be able to be potentially observed and represent empirical phenomena. (2) Criterion of Independence. The data used to develop our models and hypotheses must not be the data used to test them. In modeling terminology, this is termed verification vs. validation. If this criterion is not meant, the best we can do is tautalogize the record, which too often happens. Another aspect of independence is the need to develop multiple lines of evidence to strengthen and revise hypotheses and theories. (3) Criterion of Provisionality. We should always be aware that our knowledge of processes and entities could be inadequate. Hypotheses exist to be refuted. We should strive to develop hypotheses with this in mind, not to support pet theories. There are many archaeologists as you know that embrace tautalogies this way. We must be willing to let refuted hypotheses go, even seek to refute our hypotheses ourselves. We are thus trying to attain, as Popper states, “successive approximations of reality” and I would add “reality as understood through our observations." Ben
