In Response To: Re: more on social darwinism (Dave) : I've always thought that science tries to explain the how and religion tries
Science's aim is to explain the what, how and why. Of course, we haven't reached the point where it has explained why yet, since that would need an ultimate theory of everything that we just haven't been able to formulate yet. It's my opinion that some day (probably not in my life time, unfortunately), we will be able to reduce the universe to a single theory that does explain why this place exists. We're already pretty close to understanding why it is the way it is. : Also apparently some huge percentage of theoretical
These sorts of figures are cited fairly often, and although I don't doubt their accuracy I would question whether religious beliefs in theorists is quite so widespread. See, especially from the reductionist perspective, the notion that God created the universe doesn't exactly tell us about origins aside from taking a step backwards. It's much the same as multiverse anthropic theory, or the ekpyrotic theory (for those who don't know what these are, basically, the anthropic principle states that the reason we observe a universe that can support complex chemistry and life is because if it weren't that way, we wouldn't be here to observe it, so possibly our universe is just one existing in a wider universe - this leads us to the question "Well, then how did the multiverse come to exist?". The Ekpyrotic theory explains the big bang as the result of two "branes" ("universes") colliding and releasing an explosion of energy - again, where did the branes come from?) - that is, if God created the Universe, who created God? Which is why I don't think that many theoretical physicists could be convinced of God's existence. I suspect that in most cases it's a source of comfort, a "god of the gaps", as you said (which could lead to complacency, but I dunno, I'm not a theoretical physicist yet, and I'm not religious so I can't speak from experience), or just as some residue from their upbringing, like most people. I do know that there are a lot of biologists who are devout Christians, though (my father's co-worker for instance). I can see that from the perspective of a biologist, who really isn't interested in origins past the beginning of life, the explanation that God started it all would be much easier to accept. - Reiginko |
