In Response To: Social Darwinism (Dave) : There is a very, very big difference between "Darwinism"* and
From what I know about Social Darwinism the killing of another race part does play in, but not as much as the importance of class structure. Social Darwinism would preen out all handicapped people from society to make society a "better" place with only good people with eventually hope of ending up at Gattaca. Those who were below the poverty level deserved to be there and if they couldn't pull themselves above that line then so be it. Basically, it becomes a survival of the fittest within society which is were the term Darwinism is slapped on but from what I've read it seems to be taken mostly on a caste level in society, not two societies vs. each other. Andrew Carnegie was a Social Darwinist of sorts who would always screw over the working class as hard as he could because he figured if they let themselves get screwed over so be it. He gave large donations of money to libraries and the like so that people were given the opportunity to help themselves. : Proponents of Social Darwinism
Moral relativists could be stretched to include many Bhuddists, from what I know. Of course, I could be way off on that... Moral relativists could easily believe in the other, non-war side of Social Darwinism I mentioned above. In fact, I would guess it would almost take a moral relativist to be a Social Darwinist due to the unwillingness to help people who are mentally handicapped or unable to work to keep themselves alive. : There is no way to measure this
I would agree it isn't a science, but it isn't all religious either. The form you described is more religious, but the form I described isn't. I would agree it's more of a political form than scientific or religious, akin to Socialism (as far as I know, unrelated) or Capitalism (is political the correct term?). : And there are many, many religious people who believe in evolution.
Thank you! People seem to get that stuck in their heads... but it's just not true. : *Darwinism is a bullshit term. I'm sorry, but it is. Darwin might have come
Eh... you have a point. I would propose that until a theory has been universally accepted then you need to call people who believe in it something. I, for instance, am Creationist. I could also be an Evolutionist. Everyone sane believes in the Theory of Gravity so there isn't any point slapping a label on it. |
