In Response To: Re: Marathon Pfhor (Reiginko) : - Forrest's consistently told us what happened to those "Marathon
Just to be accurate, I never said that Halo began life as a Marathon sequel... at least, not in the GAME sense. Its story was set later (much later) in the same universe and quite likely featured the same main character, but it got its start gameplay-wise as a scifi Myth derivative. However, I do recall reading somewhere... the scrapbook perhaps? (Mine was destroyed so I can't check) Or somewhere else? ...that before Bungie settled on Myth-Oni-Halo as their dev focus, before Marathon Infinity, before they had decided to end the franchise, they were working on an actual, genuine Marathon 3. As in, new engine revamp, 3D, all new scenario taking place after Marathon 2 (probably during the Pfhor war), and so on and so on. Although now that I think about it, it's not unlikely that those plans turned into the early Marathon-related Halo iteration. So anyway, there can't be a Marathon 4, because there's never been a Marathon 3 yet. Infinity was an engine patch (new weapon, new monster, new texture set, and other tweaks), an expansion pack (which even has its own name, "Blood Tides of Lh'owon"), and some extras (Forge and Anvil), all wrapped up in one package. Hell, if I was Bungie I might have sold it bundled with Marathon 2, or separate from but requiring Marathon 2 (i.e. it installs over an existing Marathon 2 install). It would help newbies make a lot more sense of the story too, if you were forced to play through M2 before you could play Infinity - since Infinity is basically re-playing Marathon 2 over and over in alternate timelines. If you'll recall, a lot of people (not the hardcore fans, but other people) complained at the time of Infinity's release that Bungie had undershot the mark for a sequel, especially coming out contemporary to the (wow! TRUE 3D!) Quake. Marketing it as an expansion pack could have negated that quite a bit, and possibly sold more copies of M2 along with it. |
