There's a lot that seems extremely suspect about this rumour:
- I'm no IMG regular, but judging from an analysis of the thread starter's join date with his post count (recent joining, but apparently fairly regular posts), I'm not going to throw out the idea that he's just trying to "break in" to the community as one of the forum "regulars". This is extremely prejudiced of me, of course, and this isn't my main reason to discredit the rumour, but he might think pulling a stunt like an M4 rumour could be the thing that makes him less of a faceless "noob", as all the kids are saying these days.
- I doubt very much that Bungie's not currently working on Halo 3 at the moment. It's feasible that they've split production, but considering how well that worked back in the Bungie West/East days (Oni fell far short of expectations - though it still kicked arse - and Phoenix got cancelled), I'm not too sure how willing Bungie would be to take this route right now. You never know though.
- Forrest's consistently told us what happened to those "Marathon 4" plans. They turned into Halo. I'm more inclined to believe Forrest than this random guy on IMG.
- The proclamation of "Bungie wants it to be Mac-only" just screams "D'rat'er" to me. By my estimate very few of Bungie's current employees worked there back in the Mac-only heydays. Jason, Robt, and the list for me kind of runs out. Frankie's a Mac fan too, but he surely doesn't count. After Joe Staten and Marty are accounted for, I'm not sure if anyone else at Bungie even uses a Mac. It also would be a ridiculous reversal from the consistent "platform advocacy is for dweebs" line they've held since Marathon 2 was ported. If the rumour had any credibility left before this point, it has none now.
I'm really rooting for this rumour to make something of itself, but I'm not going to bet money on a horse (especially a dead one that's being beaten into the ground) just because I like the name. :)
