A very intriguing thought. However, from the first message in Terminal 1 in Waterloo Waterpark:
Your suit has been modified to recharge at
Pfhor power stations and to use Pfhor
uplink terminals to upload yourself into a
pattern buffer on my ship.
Now obviously Bungie gave quite a bit of thought to inquisitive people like us and tried to head us off at the pass. Unfortunatley, there are situations when the pattern upload to Boomer cold not work - after you destroy Durandal's core in Begging for Mercy, for example. There has been quite a lot of speculation on this before and I'm not sure if any of us have come anywhere close to a concensus. Perhaps Boomer's systems remained active, even after the ship crash-landed and Durandal's core was pulled. More likely Durandal was just telling us this to get us to act quickly without worrying about uploading our pattern to a Pfhor database that they could easily hack into. But then the mechanism of pattern buffering has also been the subject of intense speculation here and although there is some disagreement, I think that most of us believe that PB's work by serving as a time beacon to our Jjaro implants. When we die, our memories are uploaded into the last pattern buffer we accessed at the moment we accessed it, so that we are able to "remember" what went wrong and to try to avoid making the same errors this time. The PB's, shield recharges and our own implants are probably all of Jjaro origin, explaining the compatibility.
The situation with oxygen is a bit trickier, since xenobiology does not guarantee that we would all be O2 breathers, or that we would all be adapted to the same range of O2 partial pressures and trace element tolerance. Since we're cybernetic, it's likely that we have been genetically adapted to a wider range of atmospheres, but then what about Bob? It's possible that the Pfhor genetically adapted them as well. More likely is that the Pfhor are forced to make use of a more "general" atmosphere in their ships to accommodate all their enslaved client races. We can specifically note that the Pfhor fighters always wear a face mask, suggesting that they are not adapted to the environment on the Marathon, whereas the enforcers are. There has also been speculation that some of the vacuum levels we encounter - particularly Post Naval Trauma - are really levels with an non-oxygen atmosphere. The reason is that we're told that enforcers are not vacuum-enabled and, yet, they survive on this level.
Interesting stuff . . .
