The Bungie guys are better at borrowing previous material and reassembling it than they are at creating original work. However... Storytellers being "perfect," or not, is irrelevant. And then there's the saying, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." It's very easy to interject your own ideas into another person's art. And basically, that's what it's all about. Art is and should be a subjective experience, preferably with a universally perceived foundation around somewhere, that all may at least get a foothold (if not the very peak of the mountain). The guys at Bungie probably weren't even thinking about the analysis their work would endure. At the time of creation, some story holes were probably known to them, others not, and other things seeming a "hole" to a 3rd party observer may actually have been a calculated construction. Also, the Bungie guys may have dropped silent "bombs" of non sequitur, knowing for a fact they'd be at least pondered on some level, when in reality the "bombs" were simply nonsense items, for effect. Having experienced this same sort of "reinterpretation" of my own work, I find the subject most interesting. I once used a "thing" in a story, and it was for no other reason than to cause debate. The "thing" was discussed in unexpected detail, and all sorts of legends and investigations were the result. Pretty funny, as the "thing" had absolutely nothing to do with anything. The whole point of creation, for my portion, is to build worlds within the mind of whomever happens to partake. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a person "living" in a place you've put together, enjoying the hell outta vistas that came from an odd corner of your mindscape. And once it leaves your head, the next brain to consume the work will always add its own set of experience and understanding. Whole universes can and do result; completely separate rooms of scrutiny, inspiration, and discovery. It's a thing of great beauty, this. But also a thing of complete destuction for the creator who's misunderstood, or simply "bad." :: Beer Can ::
