I'll be very vague and symbolic: Do not take the following literally... There were some people gathered together in a strange and remote land, at night. One of them saw something in the sky. None else saw it. Now... The one who saw the object in the sky could not possibly discern what it was. Basically, it was just a bit of light that moved quickly and unnaturally. But with purpose. Nothing in the person's experience or knowledge could ever explain the light. Furthermore, given the assignment these people had, any such oddity could be cause for alarm. Right? So, he told the others, and not only did it change the course of affairs, but it caused quite a stir of fear and discussion...and nothing was the same from there, out. In fact, this "light" was no more than a pretense. It was "zero". Had no relevance, no relation to the tasks at hand. I just threw it in for the hell of it. A total non sequitur. A whimsical dash of chaos and deceit. A total experiment to see where the chips might fall. And that's about that... Not only do I have no regret for being so deceptive, the event stands-out in my head when I think of that situation, so long ago. I still laugh aloud when I consider the flurry it caused, and how it managed to change the landscape. And it relates directly to this dicussion...that is, how, in our perceptions of art, we make more of something than it really is. And that, as I've said, is the beauty and power of art, for at the end of the day, the art becomes ours, forever, and in a way unique to each of us. :: Beer Can :: | |
