I cant prove it (but it is a pair of Bungie timelines so you cant relly prove anything ;p) but I get the feeling that Halo sports a revised edition of the Marathon timeline. I vaguely recall (as if from a dream yada yada) one of the Bungie crew saying that Marathon story had 'holes in you cold curl up and crawl into' or something similar -- this implies to me that the Marathon story was built to pad round the Rampancy story arc (Durandal's search for freedom being the main story in the first and second games) and not quite as explicitly to form a whole universe, as we would hope. Given the choice and opportunity, (as bungie seem to have done,) wouldn't you revise the logical and minor plot-point inconsistencies in your game universe? You could look at the choice like this: Shoehorn what will evidently be a worldwide franchise into a game universe you never seriously expected would grow so big. Give said game universe a little tweak to turn it into a universe suitable to become a worlwide franchise, and allude to the original universe (with things like the Marathon symbol on the PoA) thereby retaining the audience amassed by the original universe. With me so far? This idea fits nicely, right down to things like that marathon/halo screenshot pair with the two hunters, one human, SPNKr and purple alien ship: it could almost be described as 'same screenshot, similar (but different) universe' [z]
