| In Response To: You guys are just trying to get me to give up. (Starship Security Officer) : It's not going to work. On the contrary - I would encourage you to continue to dream and if you can really turn your ideas into a working game, more power to you. In terms of building your game using the Marathon engine or AO, one important thing you should probably know is that you are precluded from selling your scenario. You can't make money off of it. Bungie owns the copyright on the game engine, the mapmaking tools and everything else related to Marathon. When they released the M2 source code to the open source community, as per the terms of the open source license, anyone using it is precluded from using it for commercial purposes. I don't think I need to remind you who owns Bungie these days and even though they haven't done anything about M1A1 and Rubicon, which blatantly infringe on their copyright, as long as no one is making any money off of this, they probably don't care or are just unaware of our little fringe group. Microsoft does have a history of making examples of anyone, however, that uses their copyrighted material for profit. If you want to make money off of your game, it will have to be without using anything in any way related to Marathon. If you can do that, good luck. P.S. most of the major players in the video game industry have programs to nurture upcoming talent. You're probably still too young for these but, in spite of what it seems, you'll be ready before you know it. Although story development is a part of game development, story developers are, as you can see from this forum, a dime a dozen. If you really want to break into the field and get paid to do it, it's your math skills that will count. Physics plays a big role in virtually all modern video games. So does image rendering. Being a wiz at applied math - algebra, trig and calculus - coupled with your vision and drive will be the ticket for entry. | |
