Re: Yes, it is.

: Personally, I don't think these minor discrepencies warrant the removal of
: ILB from canon status. All it really needs is a little retconning in a
: future official source.

Again, that's the canon firewall "default to accept" opinion. Include it unless there's a reason not to.

What is the compelling reason TO include it?

I think that's a fairly apt metaphor. Canon ought to be like a firewall-- deny by default, accept if there are compelling reasons.

Exactly what part of the Haloverse is impoverished by the exclusion of ILB?

: I don't know. I suppose I'm a little biased because I loved that piece of
: media so much. Everyone I've shown it to (from die hard Halo fans to
: people who've never touched an Xbox controller) have been totally blown
: away by the voice acting, story, and presentation of that amazing audio
: drama. And it really expanded the Halo universe by delving into the lives
: of everyday citizens (something no other source has done). Its troubling
: to think Bungie would throw it out, especially since its problems are SO
: EASY to fix. Its not like Master Chief showed up at Jan's apartment for
: dinner when he was supposed to be on Halo.

I dunno. As an advertising campaign, it was impressive. As a radio drama... I've heard better, and far too much of the Durga material (which is about half of it, to be honest) makes me groan.

Being canon is (to me at least) more than just being non-contradictory. To me, ILB never felt like Halo. It felt like conversations between people who were pretending they were in Halo.

If ILB's continuity problems and contradictions are so easy to fix, and the material is so valuable to the canon, one would assume Bungie would rehabilitate it (as they did years ago with the Lost Network Packets, addressing problems in the Marathon timeline).

To date they haven't done so; presumably they don't feel a need to.

If I were Bungie I'd probably feel far more attached to source materials like the games and the bible, and things the studio produced, rather than an ad campaign based off their materials.

I think if Bungie really liked ILB that much, it really would be cut and dried by now that it was canon. That it isn't, after all this time, says something to me.
