In Response To: Re: I wish I could quit you (Narcogen) : Well, in those cases we have to make exceptions for the nature of the medium. : Sarge can be killed in H1 any number of times, yet he appears in the : sequels. That, to me, is not evidence of one primary source contradicting : another, but is an unintended consequence of 1) the nature of the medium : and 2) the shifting importance of a character (after all, I don't think : even Bungie intended the "sniper sergeant" to become a pivotal : character who would one day have a novel devoted to him). The first big bungie fanfest after Halo 1 shipped, I remember seeing Marty and other folks hanging out and I wandered over to see what's up, and I hear Marty exclaim (paraphrasing) "The Sarge should be in every game Bungie ever makes!" everyone else laughed (I certainly did) and nodded in agreement. This little scene to me was funny and also interesting... while I liked Sarge and thought he had some funny lines and was a definite 'personality', he hadn't made it to 'best character in all of Bungie-dom' in my mind so I kinda took Marty's exclamation as exaggeration, but at the same time I thought I might've just witnessed a snippet of the 'water-cooler' discussion that'd been percolating in Bungie's open-offices at the time. How much of that is based on the comfort and likability of David Scully with Marty and the rest of the crew, or on the potential they realized they had with the character of Johnson, or the realization that going into Halo 2 they *had* to pull someone up from the sidelines, or a combination of all the above? Which leads me to a different observation: There's been such a reverence in the past for the Halo Bible, but I wonder if it's a 3-hole loose-leaf notebook. It would have to be because Johnson went from supporting to main character from 1 game to the next - the bible has to be a malleable thing. Unless it can be claimed that Johnson *always* had a larger part in the story line but they couldn't pull it off in-engine to their satisfaction or due to time restraints. - M
