True, ILB certainly did deviate from the true path of Bungie canon in a few areas. However, it never broke canon in any major story elements. The timeline was untouched and all main characters from the Halo games were unaffected. I think all of the things that Bungie had problems with revolved around Durga/Yasmine/Melissa/Operator's character. She was supposed to be a Spartan II that didn't survive the augmentations at 14. Then they salvaged her brain for making an AI. This doesn't work because she hadn't even been born when the Spartan II program was terminated (too bad because it was an amazing plot twist that tied perfectly into Halo's lore at the time). Additionally, I think Staten really hates the idea of time travel, so Melissa's jaunt into our time was probably enough for him to banish ILB from canon alone. Personally, I don't think these minor discrepencies warrant the removal of ILB from canon status. All it really needs is a little retconning in a future official source. Yasmine could have been kidnapped for other unknown reasons (maybe the UNSC was really hard up for donor brains). And I've always figured that that slipspace rupture on the Apacolypto seriously scrambled Durga's matrix. Maybe she really was going rampant and her obsession with Jersey's dad and her own research into her past caused her to make up the whole Spartan and time travel thing. I don't know. I suppose I'm a little biased because I loved that piece of media so much. Everyone I've shown it to (from die hard Halo fans to people who've never touched an Xbox controller) have been totally blown away by the voice acting, story, and presentation of that amazing audio drama. And it really expanded the Halo universe by delving into the lives of everyday citizens (something no other source has done). Its troubling to think Bungie would throw it out, especially since its problems are SO EASY to fix. Its not like Master Chief showed up at Jan's apartment for dinner when he was supposed to be on Halo.
