: To be honest, that was the appeal of Star Wars in a lot of ways. : I was never really all that interested in Sith or Jedi. : What captured my imagination in Star Wars was the Battle of Yavin and its : follow-ups at Hoth and over Endor. : The space combat, X-Wings, Y-Wings, A-Wings, TIEs, Mon Cal cruisers and Star : Destroyers and all the other imagination and detail put into the Rebel and : Imperial fleets through the expanded universe. : Those battles are what sold me into Star Wars and its where most of my : attention has focused since. The X-Wing series of novels and the : half-dozen games following the exploits of Rogue Squadron or others. : That was good stuff there. : Still, that's not to say SW isn't quite a mess in a lot of ways. : There a lot of problems to cause that, but some of the big ones imo would be : the lack of effort and interest in a solid canon for many years in the EU : followed by there being an incredibly high number of different authors : involved, many of which playing with the key characters where you have to : be most careful (look at The Flood. That novel gets a lot of grief because : the Master Chief character represented in it seems to differ significantly : from the Nylund MC). : Speaking of Karen Traviss, I was surprised to see she has written the first : GoW novel due out soon. : That certainly puts expectations high imo after the likes of Hard Contact. Yeah, I love what Traviss has done for Star Wars. I've read every novel and short story she's written for SW and they've all been great. Even the main characters feel like real people when she writes them. It'd be interesting if she ever has a chance to write Halo. She would be perfect for capturing the desperation and anger felt by humans being hunted to extinction by the Covenant. Don't know if she ever will though. In the meantime, she'll be tackling the same themes in GoW.
