And we do our best to sew the former into canon as we find : them..." in direct reference to ILB and the Cortana Letters. Do not make the mistake of calling the Cortana Letters canon, or pseudo-canon, or near-canon. Bungie has said many times, in no uncertain terms, that these letters, as a canonical aspect of the Halo universe, were discarded years and years ago. The inclusion of individual lines into Halo 3 is nothing more than a tip of the hat to old-time fans. The reasoning behind their abandonment as canon has nothing to do with their consistency, or Bungie's faith that they would have made a good story - it's that they were used, improperly, by an overeager Bungie employee in ways that nobody involved in the story had intended, and it was easier to dump them altogether than it was to try and patch up the holes.
