Fools and their feelings.

In Response To: Re: ironic... (RyokoTK)

: Well, that was a joke. In retrospect, though, I could have made that more
: obvious.

Yeah, I figured. :) I just thought it was funny for more reasons than was probably intended.

: Okay, but I can't think of any instance where I actually put people down
: because they don't compare to me, so a lot of people seem to be feeling
: insecure and extracting more than what's there from what I do say. It's
: just irritating. If I try to be prideful, I'm a bad guy. If I pose my
: opinions, I'm being selfish (what?). If I suggest my own maps, I'm being
: vain. I guess it actually doesn't even bother me that much; it's just
: obnoxious, and it gets pretty silly.

It is a strange Catch-22. And it is obnoxious and silly. One of my own personal exercises back when I had to handle large amounts of trolls and fools was to try and figure out the best way to handle them. I found that out ignoring them works well enough, but there are some that seem to spawn a personal vendetta against someone else.

After being targeted there really is not much that can be done. My personal experience is to stay mellow and than try and garner support from the community. In other words, exactly what you are doing. :)

: If people can't tell that my opinion is just an ordinary ol' opinion, then
: that's their fault, not mine.

Yes, it is their fault, but there are still reasons to try and avoid the confusion. A technically perfect essay on mapmaking is great, but you can increase your audience more by softening the edges. I simply see it as smart writing.

In the end, it sort of comes down to two groups of people: those who see opinions and those who see people attacking them. I have been burned in many discussions because I simply stated my opinion and never bothered to state the obvious disclaimer that it was my opinion.

People have always responded better when I simply made the opinion part explicit. Sure, it gets a little annoying for those of us who see everything as opinions. If you or I read a paragraph that is marked with opinion flags we get bored. It calms other people down.

: Except that's completely ridiculous. If somebody asked me what I thought
: about a map, and it sucked, I would say something like that.
: [snip]
: As I said in my response
: to Fobo's college thesis, I don't need to cushion that with "I don't
: think X is very good," because it's redundant and weakens the review.

There is a difference between weakening a review and softening it. When I write critiques on art or writing, I am vicious. I point out everything I think could use improvement. But I do not simply list them in a harsh, bullet-point list. I talk about it and ease into the bitterness.

I also try and point out the things I did like. Even if the map is 99% crap, I would try and say at least one positive thing. I do not see this as weakening the argument, I see it as politics. And adding things you like to the review does help the author.

And I would also disagree that stating "I do not think X is very good" weakens the review. It is a little redundant, but it only repeats implicit statements. I balance it, personally. I usually put a standard, "The following is my opinion, so ignore it if you want to." at the beginning before I start a review.

I have tried to find ways to stick little hints in throughout the review. Enough so it helps affect the mood, but not so much that people like you or I get annoyed.

: It's impossible to gain the respect of idiots who disrespect you, so I don't
: even bother.

Oh, I agree. But you can prevent pissing matches and keep things a little more calm which helps everyone have more fun.

That being said, there is only so much that can be done. Knowing absolutely nothing about whatever this is about I cannot respond to you or your squadron of idiots in particular. I am merely talking based on my own experiences with these kinds of people.

: For the record, I don't brag or talk trash (except in jest to my friends).
: So, moving on.

Works for me. ;)

: Really? People rip into my maps, and I ignore them fairly easily.

Okay, I should have quantified that: some people take it personally.

: I don't vocalize negatively as a general trend, I just vocalize negatively
: about things that deserve a negative response. That just tends to be a lot
: of things in my book. I can't really help that.

You can state negative things in a positive manner. It takes a little word-smithing, and a little time, but it can be done. I am not very good at it yet but I am working on it.

: That's what I figured, in which case, I basically don't care. I'm of the
: opinion that blunt, harsh criticism is the strongest gift I can give (if
: someone asks for it, of course). That way, there's no room to
: misunderstand what I say, or to what degree I mean what I say, and they
: know exactly what I think -- and assuming that they asked, that's a good
: thing. Right?

Oh, I completely agree. I would much prefer someone like you to review my map than a shmuck who simply says "Good job, great map." When I as for criticism I am specifically looking for things to fix.

Not everyone does that, however.

If they asked you for it, I say give 'em both barrels. I would still try and make things sound nice... but I would never sacrifice honesty to maybe help someone else's self-confidence issues.

Personally, I think that those who are upset with you are probably overreacting. I think you could probably improve your tact a bit, but I think they could also use some tougher skin.
