: The Nazis were on top of everything it seems. Well, sort of. Just look at
: Raiders of the Lost Ark!
In real life, the Nazis were big into the occult: many in the Nazi party believed in witchcraft (the Nazi party grew in part from the Thule Society, which many conspiracy theorists claim to be a cabal of witches/Freemasons, and the Thule Society did believe that the Germanic people were a 'super-race' with mystical powers),and Hitler himself ordered special groups to go around the world searching for supernatural artifacts that he believed would help the Axis get an edge over the Allies (Indiana Jones, Hellboy, PiD, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein all were influenced by this). I always thought that Müller and gang were one of these groups dispatched to the pyramid to investigate rumors of supernatural activity. Speaking of RTCW: was anyone reminded of PiD/Lovecraft by the levels inside the subterranean temple (tight, claustrophobic hallways, dead Nazis, undead monsters...)
I can't speak for how much of the info on this site is true and how much is conspiracy stuff, but it talks about the history of the Thule Society and how many in the Nazi Party believed in the occult: http://www.crystalinks.com/thule.html
