I don't think the Jackals and grunts are the carriers because what would then infect the jackals and grunts in the first place, if not other carriers? I believe that the lack of resemblence also adds to the discouragement of this. The smaller spores might have infected the jackals and grunts in the first place, but those are created, as far as i can tell, by the carriers in the first place. Although I never really considered the roots of the carriers and spores too often.
