Re: Yes, Yes, YES! : ) (long again)

In Response To: Re: Yes, Yes, YES! : ) (long again) (Brian Josselyn)

: Plot is not problem; we got oodles and oodles of plot. It's story and
: characters that is the challenge. Especially with the limitations of the
: game dialog and actions. Now try to match actions in a game you have no
: control over...believe be brother, it isn't easy. But I am happy with
: enough of what I've seen to know it has great potential.

Well, the thing that makes me curious, is that a LOT of the plot is "interacted with." Specifically the warfare. In terms of your movie, I'm looking forward to seeing how you're going to make it interesting, since you don't have the devtools Bungie has, and can't simply "leap out into third person."

And another thing... Master Chief has what... 10 lines, in the entire game? I'm curious to see what you're going to do to develop him. However, if this is just a repeat of the game in "non-interactive" form, just for the fans, I guess that won't be an issue. For a wider audience, more would have to be done, don't you think? You don't really get a sense of MC's sense of duty in the game, or his ignominy for having to leave his comrades behind. Really, when you think about it, The Fall of Reach adds entirely new dimension to Master Chief's character, none of which is really "readily apparent" in the game itself.

: Because of dialog restrictions, what's in the game is what we've got. Because
: I don't have a development kit; all control, camera actions, footage,and
: dialog have to be captured "in game" for this project. You'd be
: surprised how imaginative you have to be. : )

Again, I'm looking forward to the final cut. ;)

: Well, if it never is made, well never know. You answer reminds me of a poem.
: The author's name escapes me but I believe a line went like this:
: "The most painful words in either breath or pen are these: "What
: might have been."

Hehe, I like that line. Good show. ;)

You suggest that in making a motion picture of Halo, Bungie would have nothing to lose. I suggest the same for if they didn't. ;)

: Ah, well I see maybe why you’re panicking. Having Bungie drop everything to
: work on this would be unwise and foolish. That's not what I'm proposing at
: all. Bungie could have "control" as you put it, without running
: the day to day. Bungie makes games. They should continue to make games,
: and leave the filmmaking to the filmmakers. (Just like the filmmakers
: should leave the game developing to the developers? ; )

This is where my inexperience with the subject comes into play, but I'm not sure how, without keeping a watchful eye on the entire process, Bungie could keep the Halo "vision" as their own, and not have it turn into the Director or some such's vision.

: (see above) Time spent in perusing an honorable goal, is never wasted. Even
: if it was a failure, you learn from that failure and use that knowledge on
: the next project. We learn far better from a failure or defeat, than from
: an easy victory.

I won't argue with that. ;)

: Don't underestimate them. I'm sure you'd like to pick the lamest, off the
: wall requests from the rabid game fans, and sight them as reasons not to
: move forward. Don't limit yourself by looking at only the 12 years-olds.
: There are plenty of other fans with a greater sense of aesthetics, and
: understanding of what would work and what wouldn't.

*nods* Oh definately. That wasn't an attack on Halo fans in general. I'm a proud member of the Bungie community, because (most of) the community is composed of respectable and knowledgable individuals. Not everyone, though.

: No no, that's not what I ment. If you look at the game's day to night cycle,
: the entire time MC is on HALO takes a little over 2 days. This was covered
: in a previous topic thread. I'm saying if Bungie can make a game that
: takes 7-20 hours to play, but in real time it lasts 2 days, well, then
: making a film that lasts 2 hours and still covers the 2 days, is very easy
: and is really a non-issue to make the film.

Yes, but you were PLAYING those hours, as opposed to watching someone else play (hopefully). There's the rub, if you ask me. ;)

: Don't worry. I'm sure even if 1 million copies of the DVD were given for free
: for the fans and we got 999,999 positive reviews back, you'd still think
: it sucks. : ) You don't have to believe. All I have to do is say,
: "Yes it can be done..." one more time, than everyone else
: saying, "No, you can't." The rest will take care of itself.
: Faith manages. ; )

Well, like I said, I plan to keep an open mind about it. And I'm also glad that my negative opinion on the subject isn't stopping you. :)

In the end, I guess this is a situation where I'd LOVE if someone proved me wrong. ;)

: Everything from actor, to locations manager, sound & film editor,
: director of second unit, production assistant, videographer,
: transportation manager, extra,....you name it. The only thing I haven't
: done is make-up. I have make television commercials, and digital
: photography in my spare time. : ) Thanks for the interest.

That's cool. You've got a lot of experience under your belt, then. If anyone in the community can pull this off, I believe it to be you. :)

: Just because a company says they will make a great GAME doesn't make it so
: either. (look at Dikatana). That's no reason not to do it. Hell, HALO
: might have flopped. and then where would we be? : ) People might have
: said, "Buy an XBOX? Just for One game!??! Forget it!" and I'm
: sure some did. But hell that didn't stop, over one million people spending
: on average over $350.00 to buy HALO. Now that alone says a lot.

Daikatana was dead from the get-go. But that's Romero's fault.

Further, Bungie has something Romero doesn't: A good reputation. I don't think I ever once actually heard Bungie say "This game is gonna kick ass." What they showed us spoke for itself. Bungie, much like Id Software, are more than just game developers, they're artists in their industry. Most Mac users would STILL point their nose in the air at Quake, as the experience is nothing like that of Marathon's. If Bungie had been a dual platform or PC specific developer, Doom and Wolfenstein would have been put in their place. ;)

I guess what the point of that was... Sometimes you can expect quality by knowing the source. If Bungie's developing it, you expect a quality game. If M. Night Shyamalan(sp?) is directing it, you expect a good movie. If it was made by Craftsmen, you expect a good screwdriver, etc, etc, etc. ;)

Again, I want to point out that this is not a reference to your movie. That was specifically directed at the idea of a full motion picture.

: I know I got Dave's attention. : ) Maybe if we could get Matt onboard that
: would help. I wish I could say more, but I promised........

'k, I'll e-mail him, ask him if he has the time to let us know what exactly Bungie's stance IS on the idea of a Halo motion picture.

: I understand your fear, because that's where all this resistance is coming
: from. And to a degree, I share it. I want this to be a great film to. : )
: But even with that fear, I still think it should be done. It needs to be
: done. It's begging to be done. It could be EPIC. Because I have faith in
: the great filmmakers I've seen and industry people I've worked with.

*nods* There are industry greats, certainly. But would it be a crew of these greats that would make this movie, or would the crew "fall short?" Neither of us can say, really. ;)

: I think you would have a lot to contribute to the film project. Sometimes the
: best help is an opposing point of view. It keeps you sharp, and gives you
: perspective. Not everyone had to see eye to eye to help each other. : )

Well then, I'll continue to argue with you until opening night. ;)
