: I guess I've always like the shield bar in the middle, because to me, it is
: the most important factor in your battles, next to how much ammo you have.
: And I feel that whenever the shield bar is in the corner, I find myself
: looking for it, when it should be an intuitive position, where the people
: can glance at it and get all of the information that they need.

What makes center placement more intuitive for you? H:CE put it in the corner from the start, so the switch to center placement with H2 was itself an adjustment players had to make. Also, many video games put your health meter in the corner, dating back to the days of NES, so you'd think gamers would be accustomed to looking in one corner or the other.

Current Halo games have your weapons and grenades on opposite corners of the screen. Wouldn't it be more intuitive to put those things together? And with the introduction of Team BIOS, having that right next to your own health meter just makes sense, I think.

: For the health points, I've always preferred not showing them, because when a
: player's shields are down, it creates a frantic rush in gameplay, and it
: activates the player's "Fight or Flight" mode, which in my
: opinion, creates another combat variable into the game, where the
: defending player either becomes super aggressive, in which, the original
: attacking player would need to defend him/herself, or the defending player
: attempts to escape, in which the attacking player needs to use his
: instinct to follow up on the kill.

I guess I just see it the exact opposite way. If you can always duck behind cover and wait a moment for full health regeneration, that creates a stop-and-go cadence to a firefight that I don't really like. It means you can pop up, kill a couple targets, hide in a corner, rinse, repeat. It flattens the sense of escalation over time and the only way to make subsequent encounters more difficulty is to make the enemies ahead stronger and better equipped.

Which raises the question, if you have stronger and better equipped soldiers, why not send them in first?

Having shields that recharge but health that doesn't means the player is pressured to manage several encounters until you find another health pack. Later encounters become more difficulty because the player's resources are strained, not because the enemies suddenly have bigger guns that would have been useful against you earlier in the level.

Is it worth blitzing a small patrol and risk taking unnecessary damage, when there could be tougher enemies around the corner, or should I approach carefully and conserve my resources? This approach worked in H:CE because you always feel isolated and cut off from support. Later games had a way of always giving you what you needed for the very next encounter and I'd prefer to get away from that habit.
