I think it shows that he really isn't just a machine: he had been ruminating over this very point since she first said it. Lasky sparked a memory, a memory of an unresolved existential question, "who am I?" It's one of those questions we all have to ask ourselves at some point, and it is the question that gives meaning to our lives. John's never really known. He knows what he does, but WHO he really is seems a mystery not just to us, but also to him. The answer has profound implications for all that he has done and believed up until then, and for how he goes forward from here. I find it poignant that he carries the memory of a comment made in the past that made him really look at himself; only humans have this ability of self reflection, of looking at ourselves. It is uniquely human, and here we see just how human he is...even if some would say he is broken, he is still human.
