...because it's not built as a spectator sport. I can watch it and have no real clue about what's going on due to its limited perspective that hops from player to player. I think MLG in particular is boring because the actual gameplay is stripped down and less interesting in the name of competitiveness. A game like Starcraft might lack the "immediacy" of a Halo game, but it's proved far and away more popular. That's in part because it's easy to see most of the battlefield and there's a thrill to being able to see more than one player's perspective--you can see when one player is blundering into a trap, or you can see the sneak attack the other player isn't expecting, etc.
