Per Halsey's journal, the Mark of an armor really has no bearing on the technologies involved. She only used those designations to give her military bosses something to drool over. We've seen visual variances between iterations of the Mark IV, and some overlap with the distribution of shield technology, as well as some early Mark VI suits on the field long before Chief got his, all this because the external appearance of the armor says very little about its technical capabilities.

I say this to return to the nanobots point. First of all, if the "Mark VII" self-upgrades via nanotech, then there's no reason to think the Mark VI doesn't, also. After all, it seems to have a pretty effective self-repair protocol, not just keeping Chief's armor sealed airtight after many hits but also regenerating itself within seconds of taking damage.

Second, and perhaps most important: the line giving us the nanotech explanation was a throwaway said by an ODST. You think he had access to the design specs of the next generation of top-secret power armor? It wasn't said by the narrator and it wasn't said by a character with authority, so there's no reason to take it at face value. Maybe it's right, maybe it isn't.
