So you're saying he goes into cryo with Mark VI on, and comes out wearing something else? I can accept nanomachines repairing damage to the armor, but remaking it into a new generation entirely - while stranded in space without resources or contact to the UNSC - is just too much.

Maybe he'll come out of cryo wearing his old-school Mark VI in the final game, but my point still stands. You can make up an in-story explanation for just about any kind of change, but when something well-established and iconic gets changed for no reason, and the new version is way inferior to the original, a lot of people will be understandably upset.

Was the change from Mark V to Mark VI warranted? Not from a story perspective, but at least it was grounded in the story much more naturally, and on top of that the new armor wasn't a complete departure from the aesthetic style of the original. It was like an evolution of the design, rounding the edges and making the profile more smooth, not a complete remake from scratch. And in Halo 3, the armor was basically identical to the Halo 2 Mark VI, with minor detail additions or the comparatively tiny change of the gloves.

The in-story situation between Halo 2 and Halo 3 was a lot like that between Halo 3 and Halo 4 - the Chief is away from the rest of the UNSC and has no realistic way of getting a new armor. In Halo 3, there was an opportunity to give him a new suit - maybe at Crow's Nest. Yet it stayed the same, because there was no need to change it. Bungie had already nailed the iconic design in Halo 3, so why scrap it?

In Halo 4, it seems 343i has taken the opposite route, apparently deeming the original style Mark VI as being too ugly for their game, whilst lacking an ability to view their own designs with a critical eye. Again, I could've handled the obvious detail improvements that come with better graphics, or minor changes in things like gloves, but here they've entirely scrapped the original profile of the armor, and replaced it with something that, in addition to being hideous, has nothing to do with the design of the original.
