To be fair, the second shot could just be a heavily industrialized section of the planet. It makes more sense that way anyway.. How could a handful of Corvettes accomplish that kind of destruction? Remember LNoS arrived alone, carrying a few Corvettes with it. Unless LNoS itself was coming down to glass random portions of the planet. What look like explosions coming off the glassing in the shot could be actual explosions from ground forces duking it out within this city.

That of course brings up the question of how massive civilian centers such as that and New Alexandria (and likely others) could get attacked and word not spread. ONI must have had some serious AI backing in stopping all communications from half the planet.

Not much to say about the first shot though. Those are nuclear-grade explosions, likely anti-matter bombs. If those few were the only explosions of that sort going on (how conveniently timed!), you could theoretically hide them behind the "weapons testing" veil...
