In Response To: Re: Because all of those things are easily visible (Leisandir)

: *shrug* Do you ride airplanes a lot? Eventually, people stop looking out the
: windows and just wait for the ride to end. If the Autumn was spending most
: of that time getting a refit, it's likely there wasn't even anything
: visible out the windows anyway.

Hold on a sec. It has been pointed out that people on the Autumn looked out and noticed something. Reach shows us what they would have noticed: giant smoldering areas and several massive explosions. And then you're saying that they wouldn't have looked, and that even if they had, they wouldn't have seen anything.

: To pull an example from another universe, the Normandy in Mass Effect is
: considered a stealth vehicle. It doesn't cloak, it just masks its thermal
: output. In space, there's not much point trying to look where you're
: going, you want a computer screen to tell you.

How well that would work is very circumstantial. In the case of Reach, we have a 27km-long vessel which seems to reflect visible light quite nicely. To put that into perspective, if the LNoS was in low orbit (as it is in LNoS) and uncloaked, if you were on the ground 1900 miles from LNoS's ground zero, it would be as wide in the sky as Earth's moon is from Earth's surface. Not only would anyone within that radius be able to see it, they would have a very good idea as to what it was.

To put that into even more perspective, LNoS in low orbit would be clearly visible and identifiable, by naked eye, probably even during the day, to everybody in an area substantially larger than the old Mongol Empire.

A lot of people in this thread are using the "nobody would notice the Covenant anyway" argument and... I dunno, I thought it was difficult to believe when Reach came out, and I think it's even more difficult to believe now that I've thought about it.
