Sometimes things are rendered Canon Discontinuity, i.e., they're officially retconned. Bungie "officially" retconned a large chunk of the Halo EU as Reach ignores the last third of TFoR (and, given the potential implications of such a retcon, possibly everything that takes place after it chronologically), or to use a non-Halo example, Superman Returns ignores Superman III and IV. Then we have instances where the audience, for various reasons, rejects something as non-canonical even if the creator(s) of the movie/show/game/whatever don't. For example: "There's no such thing as midichlorians," "There was only one Matrix film," "G.I. Joe ended after the movie. DIC never made any episodes," and of course "Halo Reach is not canon." That's "Fanon Discontinuity." As you've known for about a year, there's a lot of people, myself included, who reject Halo: Reach as an apocryphal story, mainly because of the massive retcons of the EU and/or the questionable quality of the writing. Of course, Bungie's "rules" concerning what constitutes canon are no longer valid since they don't have a say anymore. 343i can come up with their own rules, and from the looks of things they place the EU on the same level as the games. And, while they haven't specified one way or the other that it's the case, this Data Drop at least implicitly retcons the events of Halo: Reach out of existence and re-establishes the events of TFoR as official canon. That's what I'm hoping for anyway: what Bungie rendered canon discontinuity, 343i will restore as official canon, thus rendering Reach as the entry that is canon discontinuity. Whether or not this will be the case remains to be seen, but I'm holding out hope.
