I know plenty of people who would argue that South Park has not maintained that quality level; some think it jumped the shark years ago, and others think the early years are terrible and it got good later. In any case I would say that it may be more common for serialized works to have an arc that ascends and eventually descends, and part of what drives that arc is that it is part of the nature of commercialized works to continue to try and capitalize on increasing popularity beyond the point of diminishing returns, not actually stopping until returns on the work have begun to drop, perhaps even below initial levels. These days, of course, then you just wait ten years and reboot. Or less.
