I heard they said in one interview that they made them like this because text-based terminals take you out of the game. I'm pretty sure something like this takes you out of the game a lot more. For me, there was never any problem with the way Halo 3's terminals conveyed the story, though the animations played when you access them could've been a little more brief. The terminals in H3 were text-based, but they told a story which was engaging in a whole different way, allowing the reader's imagination to fill in any blanks. Instead, here they shove the information in your face. I'm guessing that kind of subtlety has no place in the Halo universe anymore, considering this as well as the Halo 4 trailer.
