In Response To: Re: Character investment (Louis Wu) : Heh - I find it amusing that although you and Cody seem to agree quite a bit : on the story/lack of story on Reach, the example level you used 4 years : ago to illustrate that the original Halo had a good story is one of the : two levels from that game that Cody said could be safely cut without : hurting the story. :) Hah, the thing about those levels though, is that although they're technically expendable, they still technically move the story toward it's final goal. The levels you can cut in Reach don't have that luxury. It's like Lord of the Rings without the ring... Just a bunch of skirmishes occurring in an embattled Middle Earth. Until, at the very end, Gandalf gets on the horn and tells you he has a ring he needs you to deliver. At least the Silent Cartographer and the Library were detours along an overall path. Like the stuff with Tom Bombadil; interesting, though not necessary. Bleh!
