In Response To: Re: Halo 1 images are disingenuous (Ragashingo) : Debating over what Bungie did and didn't intend with past Halos, especially, : Halo 1&2 seems silly to me given the time pressure and chaos involved in : the production of both games. Yeah, it's kind of hard to tell what Halo 1's pistol was supposed to even function like, because we have to remember that the pistol was designed and balanced for campaign, because multiplayer was being done under the table. So if the spread mechanic of the pistol wasn't working 100% like it "should" have, Bungie would have not cared because for most of development, Halo 1 was a campaign-only game. Glaring oddities like being able to subdue spread by just mashing the trigger seems to indicate that spread was hard-programmed based on the rate of trigger pulls and not the actual firing rate of the gun in-game. This would have probably actually gone un-noticed for most people, but bringing the pistol like that into multiplayer unchanged makes quirks like that more obvious because people care more/bitch more when trying to use weapons on other humans in a video game.
