In Response To: Bungie Partnering with Activision?! (gunluva) It's amusing to see the reactions of people from various sources (neogaf, HBO, bungie.net), especially in light of the fact of how minor this is relative to the stunt they pulled over a decade ago. As I understand it, Bungie has agreed to give Activision exclusive publishing rights to their next IP for 10 years. Bungie is remaining independent, and they will own whatever IP they have created. I admit this seems to be a strange collaboration considering the recent Infinity Ward fiasco, but since I.F. is owned outright by Activision, the situation is quite different. Now rewind 10 years. One of the few remaining Mac developers, who had their new IP announced by no other than Steve Jobs, had essentially turned their back on Macs, PCs, and even the Internet multiplayer they had discussed before being acquired. It wasn't just that they had gone to the "dark side", but were developing exclusively for a piece of hardware manufactured by Microsoft. The only way their fans could play their games was to purchase a piece of hardware from a company with no track record of producing game consoles. It was suicide. And we all know how that turned out . . . Activision likes to make money. If Bungie can produce a title that people want, Activision will do everything they can to make the IP successful (if it flops, well, Bungie is pretty much screwed regardless of who they paired up with). As a bonus, their titles will no longer be tied to one specific piece of hardware (and in the case of the 360, a machine that goes on the fritz if you look at it funny). Having an exclusive relationship with a console certainly has its benefits, but if they can do a good job with their ports, multiplatform releases almost always benefit the consumers, as it lets the consumer decide what hardware to play it on. I'm curious, though--I've assumed for a while that Bungie was going multiplatform at some point, which meant their relationship with Microsoft was likely to end. What publisher would you have preferred to see Bungie team up with? I've seen people throw EA around, but considering their financial difficulties over the past few years, I wouldn't be surprised if John Riccitiello gets the boot and the company returns to their old ways. Is there such a thing as the ideal publisher, particularly over such a long period of time as 10 years?
