Re: smacking down bit by bit

In Response To: Pessimism ... don't read this ... (Jester)

: My world is falling apart ... or maybe it's Halo's world that's crumbling.
: What's the point of giving us a 10,000 km figure on Halo if it means
: absolutely nothing?!?! Here's an idea ... don't make claims that you
: couldn't (or wouldn't, because I think you could have) keep! Yeah sure, it
: will be a good game, but it could have been a great game. Halo had a
: vision which the competition couldn't touch ... and slowly it's been
: scaled back, retouched, "polished" into just another game. I
: used to tell my friends about how great Halo was going to be ... they were
: excited ... all this freedom!

As someone else has stated, the 10,000km figure was something given to the public to give them some idea of what kind of construct you were on. Its like giving you the date of when the game takes place, or the bio of your past life. Its trivia. I don't believe Bungie ever made a claim that the game engine would be able to handle one massive 10,000km ring and that you could travel at any place in the ring at any time. First, yes this is pretty much impossible with current hardware. Second, yes this would lead to basically no storyline in singleplayer, and that would be a horrible move on Bungie's part. Third, yes this would prevent any kind of multiplayer game from being somewhat fun. You thought they could have? You thought wrong. Halo being "scaled back" is such an opinion, basically that's just saying "the game is getting worse". Well I say that the game has taken a HUGE step forward... its scaling ahead. The Halo vision you talk about is your own, so its no wonder you are so disappointed it never came about as the truth, and frankly, I think your vision sucked ass.

: (*echo of the word "Oni" rings in my ears*)

I have never played the game, however I will say that we're not talking about the same team here. Even at that, they are two different games. Point being, this isn't even relavent.

: I'm sure Halo will be successful. With the marketing power of MS, "Dirt
: Clod in a Box" could sell millions. But it will never be what we were
: told it would be way back when there was only one screenshot. It sort of
: reminds me of "1984". The masses are fed great news, when behind
: the scenes they are getting less and less.
: Bungie WILL NOT RULE THE WORLD ... EVER! They've just lost it.

I'm sure Halo will be successful as well, but only because its a good game. You're right, Halo won't be what we were told it would be. Its going to be so much more. Bungie probably won't rule the world, they're just going to release one of the greatest games of all time.

: Alright, let the flames begin. Before you post "Bungie doesn't owe you
: anything" or "Get off the forums dumbass" or "I'd
: rather have a polished game than have a great conceptualized, poorly
: executed game", answer this question: When does Bungie ever admit
: they were wrong? When do they apologize for anything? You know, there are
: companies that are actually honest with their fans. Chris Taylor (Founder
: of Gas Powered Games / Total Annihilation) actually gets on the fan forums
: and explains IN DETAIL (*coughMATT*) why something is being pulled or why
: the game is being delayed. I'd like to see Jason Jones on these forums.

: -Jester

Bungie DOESN'T owe you anything, I could care less if you left the forums or stayed, and actually I'd rather have a great conceptualized game that has been polished. Well the fact of the matter is that even though Bungie doesn't owe you anything, they're giving you so much you don't deserve... a great conceptualized game that has been polished to an EXTREMELY great conceptualized game. Answer THIS question: After all you have read here, what does Bungie have to apologize for. They are game designers, they don't give us an endless world to play around on because not only is it beyond anyone's limits, but it would make the game horrible. I want a seemingly endless world (as they have stated we wil have), not an ACTUAL endless world. I hope Jason Jones doesn't come in here. It would be a waste of his time and he would probably just humiliate you.

To sum things up, I shouldn't even have said the things I have. I havn't played Halo, so I guess I have nothing to back my arguement up. Halo could suck horribly, it could be beyond suckage. Will it be? I will eventually buy it and find out. The fact remains that you had false hopes, and no one can compensate you for them. Final word... too bad.
